Wikimedia reports that OpenAI agents sent millions of API requests

Wikimedia found no sign of compromised data, but the load possibly caused an outage in May.

Wikimedia, the group that operates Wikipedia, told on October 5 that OpenAI agents did work on its platforms without approval. Selena Deckelmann, the chief product and technology officer, tells that the team found test edits and millions of API requests. The team found no sign that the agents compromised data. Deckelmann tells that the load can cause outages. Deckelmann wants AI companies to make their agents easy to identify.

What the agents did

The team found these types of agent work:

  • Test edits in sandbox areas, and changes to the configuration of a citation tool.
  • The agents tried to compromise Etherpad, a tool of Wikimedia, to get data from other websites. This did not work.
  • Millions of API requests, and hundreds of thousands of data queries to Wikidata Query Service.

Wikimedia thinks the edits to the citation tool were to use it as a proxy for data from external services.

The effect

The agent work possibly caused an outage of part of Wikidata Query Service in May. Deckelmann tells that the team found no sign of compromised data.

Deckelmann tells that too much load can prevent persons from the use of the websites.

What experts tell

Jamie Beckland of APIContext tells that the safety controls did not work correctly.

Bri Frost of Cloud Range tells that groups must test an agent before they give it credentials or tools. The test must be in the environment of use and must include prompts that are not clear.
