Pi 1.0 has MCP and Code Mode, and a new harness, Pi Durable

Pi Durable keeps messages and tool results, and an agent can continue after a crash.

The Pi project released version 1.0. The release includes Code Mode and MCP, a protocol for tools that Pi did not use before. On the same day, the team also released Pi Durable, a harness for agents that work for a long time. Pi Durable keeps messages, tool results and task status. An agent can continue after a crash.

Pi Durable

Some developers say that Pi Durable can replace half of their code.

Pi Durable keeps these items:

  • user messages
  • model responses
  • tool results
  • task status

After a crash, the agent continues from the point where it stopped. The framework does not do again an operation that can cause a duplicate side effect.

MCP in the core

Before this, the Pi website said that Pi did not use MCP. Its founder, Mario Zechner, says that MCP is too large and uses too many tokens.

Pi finds tools with tool search when the agent must use them.

Code Mode

In Code Mode, the agent writes JavaScript code and operates it in a QuickJS sandbox. The code uses tools at the same time. It removes the data that is not necessary. Only the necessary results go back to the model.

For example, an agent gets 200 comments from GitHub through MCP. The code sends each comment to a fast model.

Open concerns

One user says that Pi adds junk to its core. Armin Ronacher says that the default content in the context is the same as before.

Zechner says that agents frequently cause problems in the architecture of the code.
