Small AI models suit short agent tasks, and large models long tasks

The researchers measure energy, cost and time for each completed task, not for each call.

A pilot study of 15 open-weight models, from 0.6B to 27B parameters, found that the model that uses the minimum energy for each completed task changes with task length. For short tasks, small models are good. For long tasks, large models are good.

Which model wins? Per completed task Two columns, smaller model 0.6B and larger model 27B. Short tasks: smaller preferred. In between: goal decides. Long tasks: larger preferred. Based on 15 models, 5 developers, 2 tasks. Which model wins? Per completed task Smaller model Larger model 0.6B 27B Short tasks In between Long tasks Goal decides Preferred Preferred 15 models, 5 developers, 2 tasks
In a 15-model pilot, the model using least energy per completed task changed with task length and task type.
