65% of firms with $10bn revenue have a head of AI security
In large firms, the chief information security officer holds primary accountability for AI governance at only 7%.
IANS and Artico Search published a report on 20 October. It says that 65% of organizations with annual revenue of $10bn or more have a head of AI security. In 18% of these firms, it is a dedicated position. In 47%, it is combined with a different leadership role. The researchers say it is one of the roles that grow fastest.
Who is accountable
Chief AI officers hold primary accountability for AI governance most frequently in large firms, at 22%. The chief information security officer (CISO) holds it at 7%. In the three revenue groups, 14% to 19% of organizations have no single accountable executive.
The board
Also, 43% to 48% of organizations have no plan for a board committee on AI ethics. The role is less frequent in smaller firms. Steve Martano of IANS says leaders who connect technical security, risk and compliance are necessary.
What is not known
The source gives no result of these roles. Martano says firms must think about what the function must do for them. They must also find if they can get it in the company before they go to the external market.
Insight: Firms add AI security roles before they settle who is in charge
The role exists in 65% of large firms, but the CISO holds primary accountability at 7%. Gartner says only 21% of CIOs have governance for AI agents, while 71% plan to use them this year. This seems like a race for ownership of AI risk, and none of the three roles has won. A new title does not give a clear owner.
