Figma adds 20 MCP partners as its co-founder calls MCP flawed
Figma co-founder Dylan Field says MCP favors frontier labs. Figma limits its data because of the risk of misuse.
At its first Config conference in India, Figma announced 20 new partners for MCP, the model context protocol, an open standard that lets AI agents connect to external data and tools. The partners include Linear and Notion. Figma co-founder Dylan Field says that MCP is not a perfect protocol, favors frontier labs and can be made better.
What is new
Figma added 20 MCP partners. Days before, a co-creator of MCP complained that Figma did not work with the open source tool Pi. Field then said that Figma plans to work with Pi.
What Field says
Field wrote on X that Anthropic created MCP. He says Anthropic does not give access to artifacts and other cloud resources through MCP. He says the open against closed debate ignores asymmetric context sharing. He says MCP “is advantaged more to frontier labs” and can be made better.
What is not known
Field says that the more data Figma gives through MCP, the higher the risk of misuse. He says that most users do not plan to cause damage. The source gives no date for Pi and no data about what Figma keeps private.
Insight: Whoever owns the data decides how open a protocol is
Meta and Sierra, with partners such as Shopify and Stripe, make a different open protocol for personal agents. Field says MCP favors frontier labs, and Figma limits its data to prevent misuse. Flash Mixer shows the risk: its MCP server lets an agent mix Bitcoin. This reads as a contest over who sets the terms of agent access, and data owners hold the toll gate.
