Cloudflare helps Commerce.com start WebMCP on 100,000 domains

WebMCP gives a shopping agent tools with set names, and the agent does not guess which button to click.

Cloudflare and Commerce.com made a procedure to start WebMCP on almost 100,000 domains that Commerce.com operates on Cloudflare. WebMCP is a browser standard from Google that is in test. It gives AI agents tools on a web page. Cloudflare says agents then use less time and cost, but it gave no test results. Each merchant can opt out.

How it works

Cloudflare puts a small script on the page at the edge, the servers near the visitor. The script gives the agent tools, to find items and to add items to the cart. The tools operate in the browser session of the shopper. The agent sees the same prices and cart as the shopper.

The numbers

Cloudflare gave no numbers for speed, cost or sales. It says that, without WebMCP, agents read page code and click, and a theme change can break this.

What is not known

WebMCP is in test and has no last standard. At this time it operates behind Chrome flags and in some agent browsers. Each merchant can opt out in the Commerce.com dashboard. If the server of a shop is offline or the browser does not use WebMCP, the page loads as usual.

Insight: Shops open the door to agents, but people keep the purchase step

American Express says it protects a Card Member from an agent error only if two things are true. The agent is registered with Amex, and Amex authenticates the purchase intent. This reads as a task for each side: agents fill the cart, and a person keeps the step with the risk. Look for changes to agent checkout rules.
