Google gives Gemini voice help for navigation to Apple CarPlay
Drivers in the US can use it today. Google says the release is global but gave no list of regions.
Google gives its Gemini assistant to Apple CarPlay users in Google Maps. It is available today for drivers in the US. Google says a global release is in progress. This comes almost 12 months after Gemini came to Android Auto, the Google car system. Google gave no test results or numbers of users. Drivers can speak to the assistant for help while they drive.
What is new
- A driver pushes the Gemini icon in Google Maps on the car screen.
- The driver can tell Gemini multi-step tasks, for example to find places to see and then go there without toll roads.
- The driver can also report traffic disruptions and find data about stops.
The proof
Google gave no numbers or test results. The only number is the time of almost 12 months after the Android Auto release.
What is not known
Google gave no list of regions. Its notes do not give the Personal Intelligence features. These features read user data from Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube and Search. Google announced them yesterday for Android Auto and for cars with Google built-in.
Insight: Google puts chat on the Apple car screen but keeps personal data home
On CarPlay, Gemini works in Google Maps. Google announced the Personal Intelligence features for Android Auto and Google built-in cars, but the CarPlay notes do not give them. Google puts the chat on a rival screen but maybe keeps the data features for its own system. Monitor if Google adds them to CarPlay.
