Spotify wants to be the music service that AI agents select

Spotify has 788 million monthly active users, and it tells that agents help its business.

Spotify told investors in its third quarter report that AI agents, which are software that does tasks for persons, are good for its business. Co-CEO Gustav Söderström tells that agents do chores for persons, but entertainment is not a chore. Spotify has 788 million monthly active users and almost €5 billion of revenue, and it works with Muse from Meta, ChatGPT and Claude.

How it works

A user tells an agent to find music, a podcast or an audiobook recap. The agent tells Spotify the task, and Spotify uses its systems to select the music to play. Söderström tells that Spotify does not send listener data to partners.

The proof

Söderström tells that Spotify sees good use in agents, but the source gives no number for it. The example of Söderström is a long task. A user tells Spotify to select the top songs back to 2008, change their speed and mix a playlist.

What is not known

Amazon stopped Muse from Meta from shopping on its platform. This shows that some firms limit external agents. The source does not tell how many users use Spotify through agents.

Insight: Spotify lets agents in while other sites stop them

Yelp, Delta, JPMorgan Chase and Charles Schwab stop some agents, and Amazon stopped Muse. Meta plans to get a share of sales made through Muse. Spotify seems to bet that agents help a service that is not a chore, and that its history data makes it hard to replace. Monitor if agent owners want a share of music use too.
