Neocloud shares decrease by more than 30% in October
The price of default insurance on CoreWeave is above 11%, a level that investors see as distress.
Three neoclouds, which are cloud firms that give access to AI chips, each decreased by more than 30% in October. In the same week, SK Hynix stopped the IPO of a unit, which is the first time that a firm gives its shares to investors. Meta tells that it used more than $2 billion more cash than it made in the third quarter.
What is new
CoreWeave is the leader of the neoclouds. Its credit default swap spread is above 11%. A high credit default swap spread shows that investors give more to get insurance against default. Yields on its unsecured notes are above 15%. Gartner tells that 80% of neoclouds will stop or be absorbed by the year 2030.
The numbers
Meta increased the minimum of its capex for the year to $135 billion. More than $450 billion of its leases and contracts cannot be stopped. The credit default swap spreads on Meta, Nvidia and Oracle all went to records this week.
What is not known
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang tells that many customers want neoclouds, and that the short supply of capital will be corrected. The source does not show which side is correct about returns on AI spending.
Insight: Large firms carry fixed payments and weak firms carry the credit risk
Meta has more than $450 billion of leases that it cannot stop. The IMF found $300 billion of deals between hyperscalers and less strong AI firms in three years. Gartner sees $3.6 trillion of revenue against the $8.5 trillion that companies that have data centers must get. If a weak firm stops, the risk reads as a move back to the large firm that agreed to fixed payments. Look at the capex data in the Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon reports next week.
