The UK gives £600 million to AI security and biosecurity work

The biosecurity plan gets the most, with £100 million for a laboratory that uses AI to find biological threats.

On Saturday, October 24, the UK government gives about £600 million ($800 million) for protection against health threats and security threats from AI. The biosecurity plan gets the most. AI minister Kanishka Narayan wants the AI Biosecurity Lab to become a primary global institution that gives protection to the public from new biological threats. The government gives no dates for the funds.

What is funded

  • £100 million for a laboratory that uses AI to find biological threats
  • £65 million for countermeasures against pathogens (germs that cause disease)
  • £120 million more for the AI Security Institute
  • £130 million for cyber defense of critical infrastructure and the wider economy

Who helps

OpenAI and Anthropic give a maximum of £200 million of model credits to the plan. Model credits give use of AI models.

Google DeepMind and Basecamp Research give other help.

What is not known

The government gives no results or targets for the projects. The quantity of the growth of the National Cyber Security Centre in Manchester is not known. The credits are a maximum, and the value can be less.

Insight: The UK works with the AI labs and checks them

On October 12, the AI minister told that the UK gets new models from three labs before release. The UK data regulator also investigates AI agents at some of the same labs. At this time, OpenAI and Anthropic give model credits. This reads as a UK plan to keep the labs near while it checks them, and the labs get a position near the government. Monitor regulator results that touch these labs.
