The UK plans a biosecurity lab with OpenAI, Anthropic and Google
OpenAI and Anthropic are expected to give model credits of a maximum of €200 million.
The UK government announced a plan for AI security, the UK AI industry and AI use in the regions. It has more than £600 million for AI security and related work. A new biosecurity lab is part of it. The lab will use AI to find and monitor biological threats, with OpenAI, Anthropic and Google.
How it works
The lab will help scientists analyze biological data and find unusual disease patterns. AI can also help systems that tell of threats. The government also plans more AI use in public services and businesses.
The numbers
The plan has more than £600 million in all. The model credits have a maximum of €200 million. The announcement gives no test results, no start date and no cost for the lab.
What is not known
If safeguards are weak, persons can misuse the same skills. The UK must turn the money into results. It must have:
- threat detection that works
- good work between researchers and government agencies
- clear rules for sensitive biological data
The announcement does not tell if Google gives credits.
Insight: The UK funds and checks the same AI labs
On 12 October 2026 the UK data regulator began an investigation of AI agents at OpenAI, Meta and Anthropic. The UK AI minister also said that the UK gets new models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind before release. The labs possibly give credits as a trade, to stay near the government that tests them. Monitor if the credits come with access terms.
