Axios makes news feeds for AI agents, not for human readers

Axios tells that a large part of news use will move into AI systems.

In September 2026, at the Digiday Publishing Summit, Axios announced Axios Direct. These are news feeds for AI agents, which are software that do tasks for a person. Jacquelyn Cameron, chief revenue officer of Axios, tells that the feeds give less narrative and more structured data. The source gives no launch date and no numbers of readers.

How it works

Cameron tells that the feeds are a procedure with less work for agents to get Axios content. Cameron compares them to a Bloomberg terminal, not to a news piece. Other outlets try feeds for AI, or pieces that let agents make a piece for each person.

The proof

The source gives no test results. It names one user: Michelle Seo, a consultant in San Diego. Michelle Seo gets a morning briefing from a Muse agent, with news topics and links.

What is not known

Cameron gives no number for the part of news use that will move to AI. Other publishers use different procedures. Many publishers signed deals that let AI platforms show their content. In 2023, the New York Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement. That lawsuit continues.

Insight: News sites now compete for agent readers

Mintlify tells that AI agents send 2 times the traffic of humans to its sites. Meta tells that its Muse agent has more than 10 million users and wants a share of the sales made through it. Axios builds for the reader between the news and the person, and this reads as a race to be the source that agents pick first. Make a plan for agent readers.
