Shopify and four card networks let AI agents pay without the card
Shopify says the agent does not see the card of the buyer, and the buyer keeps rewards and protection.
On Wednesday, 28 October 2026, Shopify said it works with Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover. Buyers can use Shop Pay, the payment tool of Shopify, at each shop, also a shop that is not on Shopify. Rohit Mishra, vice president at Shopify, wrote this on X. Shopify gave no test results and no use numbers.
How it works
An AI agent shops for the buyer. The buyer pays with Shop Pay, and the agent does not get the card. In September, Shopify let browser agents check out on the sites of eligible shops.
The proof
There are no numbers. Ryan McInerney, chief executive of Visa, said in September: “We are seeing adoption for shopping, but not yet for autonomous payments.” He said the barrier is trust.
What is not known
The Information reports that Stripe uses a different procedure. Stripe gives an agent a single-use virtual card. The Information says card networks are concerned, because this gives them less control of the payment. Shopify gave no start date.
Insight: Card networks use Shopify to stay in the payment path
Stripe gives agents a single-use virtual card, which The Information says worries card networks. Shopify works with all four networks. American Express protects a buyer from an agent error only if the agent is registered with it. This reads as a fight for control of the agent payment step, and the networks seem to back the path that keeps them in it. Monitor which path shops select.
