UK chip startup Fractile raises £577M before it ships a chip
Bloomberg reports that Anthropic placed an initial $250 million chip order, but the chips are not due until 2027.
Fractile, a London startup, issued £577 million in Series C shares from 9 September to 23 October 2026, UK Companies House records show. That is about $774 million. Fractile makes chips for inference, the step when a model answers a request. Its design keeps data adjacent to the parts that do the math. It has shipped no chip and has no disclosed revenue.
What is new
Bloomberg says Anthropic agreed to buy about $250 million in chips. The two sides want to make the deal larger. The sources are not named. Fractile aims for 1,200 tokens for each second, against about 40 for each second at this time for some long tasks.
The market
Other chip startups also got money:
- Etched: $700 million at a $21 billion value.
- Olix: $312 million at a $3.3 billion value.
- Cerebras: a public listing in May.
In August, Fractile was in talks to get $600 million.
What is not known
Fractile did not tell how it will use the money. The purchase is only an initial agreement. The test is 2027, when it must supply working chips to a customer that has other alternatives.
Insight: A buyer backs a chip before it exists
Anthropic reportedly agreed to buy chips that Fractile cannot ship at this time, while investors pay for a company with no revenue. This reads as a race to get scarce inference chips first. A large customer purchase acts as a signal that draws in investors. Monitor if Fractile supplies chips in 2027, and if the purchase becomes larger.
