OpenAI limits paid ChatGPT accounts for each card and device
A user who hits the limit sees Device limit reached and cannot use that account on that device.
OpenAI limits how many paid ChatGPT accounts can use one payment card or one device, as part of its security measures. A user who links too many subscriptions to the same card cannot start any new subscriptions at this time. Free, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not count, but the paid plans Go, Plus and Pro do.
How it works
The limits apply to these paid plans:
- ChatGPT Go
- ChatGPT Plus
- ChatGPT Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500
Logout of an account does not free a position for a different account, tells the support page of OpenAI.
The proof
OpenAI gave no number for the limits. It gave no data on how many users hit the limits.
What is not known
It reads as if the limits stop users who change between paid accounts on one device to get more from low price plans. OpenAI points these users to more credits or resets of the limit. These alternatives usually have a price above that of one more subscription.
Insight: OpenAI closes the low price path to more use
OpenAI tells that from December, Plus, Pro and Business plans have one token budget for all of them. A token is a unit of text, and OpenAI gave no number for the budget. The account limits close a low price method to use ChatGPT more, and it reads as if credits are the primary payment for heavy users. Monitor the budget numbers in December. Leaders must plan for the cost of credits.
