CrowdStrike says an amateur used AI chatbots to hit nine banks

Free AI models are near the level of the top model of April, and more persons can do the same.

CrowdStrike says that a 26-year-old man in southern China attacked nine or more large South Korean banks in recent weeks. CrowdStrike says that the man is an amateur who used some AI chatbots. The attacks exposed the financial data of tens of thousands of South Koreans online. This is part of a wave of hacking that alarms governments.

What is new

Adam Meyers of CrowdStrike says that a person who is not a hacker can use these frameworks to attack targets. The US National Security Agency told websites to stop if they could not repair a large security hole in PHP. PHP is a programming language that about 70 percent of websites use.

The numbers

  • Nine or more banks were hit.
  • The top free AI models are near the level of Mythos in April.
  • Thieves stole billions of dollars from Binance, a crypto company, last week.

TRM Labs says it has no sign that AI was part of the Binance theft.

What is not known

Experts think that the problem will increase. Jason Clinton of Anthropic says that the problem will increase much more. Snehal Antani of Horizon3 says that the US government can possibly help some sectors.

Insight: One cheap AI tool serves amateurs and state-linked groups

Investigators in South Korea think one hacker used the ARTEX AI tool on banks there. CrowdStrike says a China-linked group used ARTEX on more than 200 organizations in 14 or more countries. This reads as a tool that removes the skill difference, and the speed of your patches sets your risk. Free models near the top level make this hard to stop.
