Anthropic buys the one-person biotech Mithril to test Claude on drugs
Mithril has tests on mice only, and Anthropic says tests on humans can start in late 2028 or after.
Anthropic buys Mithril, a biotech company that has one person, Tranbarger. Tranbarger goes to work at Anthropic and will start more drug programs. Anthropic says the programs show where its AI model Claude is good and where it is not. The programs also give examples to other biotechs, and medicines to Anthropic if the candidates work.
How it works
Anthropic will use Claude in drug programs. When the work goes forward, it will use Claude in clinical trials, which are tests on humans. Anthropic says the work is at this time before such tests.
The numbers
Enveda, a biotech that works with Anthropic, makes a Claude tool. It checks the manufacturing records that a drugmaker must send before a trial. Enveda says the tool finds all 11 issues that human reviewers find in 1,061 pages. It also finds 7 that they do not see, and it cuts the check time by 89%.
What is not known
Anthropic gives no price for Mithril. The primary antibody has no data from humans. The numbers of Enveda come from Enveda and are for one use only.
Insight: Anthropic and OpenAI buy different parts of drug work
Anthropic buys Mithril to operate drug programs. In April 2026 it bought Coefficient Bio, a team of less than 10 persons, for about $400 million. On 20 October OpenAI agreed to buy Orchestra Bio, which follows the dates of tests. This reads as two plans for the drug work. Anthropic works on the medicine and OpenAI works on the schedule. For drug companies, an AI supplier can also become a rival.
