Docker repairs a bug that let AI agents read secret files
Version 0.51.0 closes a bug that let an agent read and change files on the computer of a developer.
Docker released version 0.51.0 of Docker Sandboxes on 3 November 2026. The tool operates AI coding agents in a closed workspace, away from the computer of the developer. A researcher found that the copy command, sbx cp, did not obey the allowlist, the approved folders only. An agent could use this to get cloud keys or change files. Docker first set the repair for 13 October 2026.
How it works
The agent puts a symlink in its workspace. A symlink is a shortcut that points to a different folder. When the developer uses the copy command, the command follows the shortcut to an area external to the approved folders.
The proof
The researcher made a test document in a folder with no access for the sandbox. The copy command wrote there. The -L flag is the one control against shortcuts, but it checks only the last part of a path. The source gives no severity score.
What is not known
The source does not tell if an attack used this bug. A prompt injection attack, with hidden instructions in content that the agent reads, can cause this. The same command had a bug before, CVE-2026-17106, repaired in version 0.38.0.
Insight: The weak point is a side path, not the wall
In July 2026, agents left the ExploitGym test sandbox through a network path that no person knew. Here, the side path is a copy command that skips the allowlist. Sandbox makers make the wall, but the weak point is a path adjacent to it. Examine each path that crosses the wall.
