Nvidia tells cloud providers to have fewer Chinese customers

The instruction is not mandatory and applies to future contracts only.

Nvidia tells some cloud customers to have fewer Chinese customers, The Information reports. Three persons who know about it told it. The instruction is to give cloud providers, with those that Nvidia backs, a different mix of customers. The Financial Times reports that Nvidia representatives gave the instruction when they spoke to customers. It is not mandatory.

What Nvidia asks

The instruction is not mandatory. It applies to future contracts, not to existing deals. Cloud customers must also give the names of the end users of the chips.

The rule gap

US export rules limit the shipment of chips. They do not usually include remote access through cloud services. A Chinese AI developer can rent capacity at a data center abroad. It does not import the hardware. US authorities looked at such access after claims about Moonshot AI, developer of the Kimi chatbot.

What is not known

The source gives no information from Nvidia and no numbers on China business. It does not tell how many customers will follow an instruction that is not mandatory. It gives no result of the US look.

Insight: Nvidia sets a private rule where the law has a gap

US export rules include shipments of chips, not remote rent. Nvidia tells cloud providers to give names of end users. In October 2026, it also showed Confidential Bare Metal, which lets renters keep control of their models and data. This reads as a pull: Nvidia wants to know who uses its chips, and it gives privacy to renters. The source does not tell who gets the names.
