ChatGPT makes animated GIFs with the new Images 2.6 model

Users make more than 4 billion images each week in ChatGPT and its API, up from 3 billion in September.

OpenAI added GIF creation to ChatGPT with its new Images 2.6 model. A user can type a prompt or upload a photo, and then change the speed. The update goes to all ChatGPT and Codex users on web, desktop and mobile. OpenAI tells that users make more than 4 billion images each week across ChatGPT and its API.

What is new

ChatGPT could not make a GIF in one step before. A user can change the speed of the animation, edit single frames and share the result. OpenAI shows an example prompt for a cat that dances.

For developers, OpenAI launches GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and Sunburst in its API. They give faster and higher quality images.

The numbers

OpenAI gave a number of 3 billion images each week in September. It gives more than 4 billion at this time. It also tells that image creation is faster, but it gave no speed figure.

What is not known

OpenAI gave no price for the API models. It gave no test results for quality. It did not tell how it checks GIFs for misuse.

Insight: More image output makes misuse checks matter more

A Brennan Center test of six AI image tools found that only ChatGPT improved on fake election images since May. Gemini and Meta AI continue to make them more easily. OpenAI adds a new format at more than 4 billion images each week. This reads as a push for volume, and the safety checks must keep up. The release gives no data on GIF checks. Teams must test the GIFs.
