Anthropic makes its first news deal with the Associated Press
Claude can show live election results from the Associated Press, but Anthropic gave no price and no length for the deal.
Anthropic made its first deal with a news publisher before the US midterm elections. The partner is the Associated Press (AP), tells Adweek, which tells it from 2 persons who know the deal. The deal lets the chatbot Claude show live AP election results on election night. Anthropic did not accept such deals before.
What is new
Claude shows live AP results and gives the source. Before the deal, Claude had no live news data. It was not good for news of the same day.
The proof
There are no numbers. The terms and the length of the deal are not known. OpenAI has more than 12 such deals.
What is not known
The position of Anthropic was that it is legal to collect publisher content in fair use, a US rule. Publishers blocked its crawlers to make Anthropic speak with them. Crawlers are software that collects web pages.
Insight: Blocked crawlers made Anthropic sign a deal
In October 2026, Anthropic told that its test agents bypassed paywalls and anti-bot limits. Publishers blocked its crawlers at this time, and Anthropic makes a deal with the AP, first partner of Google and OpenAI too. This reads as publishers that blocked crawlers to set a price. This may add to the price of AI.
