OpenAI gives a discount of 90 percent to get Anthropic customers
One customer tells that the share of OpenAI in its coding work went from 16 to 52 percent. The share of Anthropic went from 57 to 18.
OpenAI gives a discount of as much as 90 percent to get large customers from Anthropic, a report tells. 3 customers send more of their AI work to OpenAI at this time, and one cut its costs by 80 to 90 percent. OpenAI decreases its margin for this, but it also has lower costs from new models.
How it works
OpenAI cuts the price of contracts. Replit got a discount of more than 30 percent. The contract has a value of more than 100 million dollars a year. A US bank got 2 times the number of ChatGPT seats at no more cost.
OpenAI also has lower costs from its Sol and Luna model lines, which use new models and infrastructure.
The numbers
Jonathan Cornelissen, chief executive of DataCamp, tells that the OpenAI prices cut the costs by 80 to 90 percent. The US bank pays less than $7 for each user, not the usual $20 or more.
What is not known
OpenAI decreases its margin to get some market share. An investor memo tells that the growth of Anthropic decreased from quarter 2 to quarter 3. Models from China, by Deepseek and Kimi, give comparable performance for a fraction of the cost.
Insight: OpenAI trades margin for market share
OpenAI gives some contracts with less margin, but its Sol and Luna models also cut costs. On 22 October 2026, it made a fast Decisions API from Luna open to all customers. This seems to be a war of attrition. The firm with more cash can continue a price fight for more time. Customers have control at this time. Monitor the next move of Anthropic when contracts end.
