Stripe lets AI assistants pay invoices for startups
Founders can make a human approval necessary before an AI assistant moves money.
Stripe has business banking that AI assistants can operate for startups, and a human can make an approval necessary before money moves. Through its Treasury system, founders can let assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude pay invoices, move money between accounts and change currency. Founders select the accounts an assistant can use, but the company gave no test results, no start date and no price.
How it works
An assistant connects to Stripe through a model context protocol server. This is a standard connection that gives an assistant access to account data and to the tasks that Stripe allows.
The controls
The business selects which accounts an assistant can use and limits its permissions. It can also make a human approval necessary before funds move. Stripe will add spending limits and card creation.
What is not known
Stripe gave no data on how many startups use it or how good it is. It does not give a date for the new limits. The source tells that the system is for startups that operate with small teams.
Insight: Stripe covers both agent payments and agent accounts
Stripe says that agent purchases on its Link payment system grew 38 times in September. Treasury at this time lets agents hold and move company money. Lightning Labs opened a toolkit with no human approval for each payment. It seems that Stripe bets on approval controls, because companies trust an agent payment system with them. Monitor which approval rule buyers keep.
