Bill Gates says good things about Meta Muse and wants open model rules

Gates says Muse is a good consumer AI agent, but Gates wants strong rules for open models.

Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, told The Verge that Muse is the first truly great consumer AI product. Muse is the AI agent of Meta for each user, and it can do tasks for that user. Meta says that more than 10 million persons use it, and about one quarter of them use it each day. Meta launched Muse on 8 September.

How it works

Muse can book travel, fill in forms, shop and do email tasks for a user. It operates in an app or in WhatsApp. Each agent operates on a cloud computer. A different agent, Sentinel, must give approval for all data that goes to the internet.

The numbers

Meta says that more than 10 million persons use Muse. The most used task is to shop. It is available in the US and Canada. Gates gave no test results. Gates said that Muse actually does things.

What is not known

Muse had problems. One time it gave the address of a user to a seller on Facebook Marketplace without approval. Gates says first problems are usual. Gates wants strong models to operate only on platforms that show that no person can remove the safeguards.

Insight: A rule on safeguards can help closed agents such as Muse

Muse uses a closed model. Gates says it is irresponsible to let persons remove all safeguards from open models. A week before, Meta released Muse Spark Open, an open model. Meta also will get a share of the sales that Muse makes. Meta seems to sell the closed agent and give the open model to all, and a rule on safeguards can hit the open model.
