Micro1 will spend $1 billion to buy company data for AI labs

Micro1 says that it pays $100,000 to $2 million for the data of one midsize company.

Micro1 is a startup that buys the internal data of companies, such as chat messages and documents. It licenses the data to AI labs. It says that it will spend $1 billion on this in the next year. Labs use the data to train AI how persons work. Micro1 usually wants all the data. A model can then do the work of an employee.

How it works

Micro1 has 3 methods:

  • It licenses raw data, changed to keep privacy.
  • It gives a company an AI agent in progress and gets feedback.
  • It freezes company data at one time and gives it to a lab as a simulation.

The numbers

Gartner estimates that spending on AI data will go from less than $1 billion last year to almost $6.5 billion in 2027. 2 clients sold data, but they did not give the prices.

What is not known

It is possible that employees get no pay or voice when their work becomes AI data. Ifeoma Ajunwa, a law professor at Emory University, says that data sales are an “ethically gray area”.

Insight: Company data is now sold as access and as a frozen copy

Bloomberg gives client AI agents access to its data and checks each message against the rights of the client. Micro1 buys a frozen copy of company data and licenses it to labs. These 2 moves put a price on data, and the owner that sets the terms first seems to get most. Micro1 says that the first sellers get a premium.
