IBM gives watsonx Orchestrate a gateway for agents from other firms
The new AI Gateway finds and governs agents, models and MCP servers from Amazon Bedrock, Microsoft and Google in one layer.
At its TechXchange 2026 event, IBM announced new features for watsonx Orchestrate, its platform to manage AI agents. The main one is the AI Gateway, a single layer that enforces rules and finds agents, models and MCP servers (connectors that give agents tools) built on other platforms. IBM gave no test results, prices or dates.
What is new
- AI Gateway: finds and governs agents, models and MCP servers from other firms.
- Governed catalog: shows test data, risk signals and EU AI Act information.
- Premium Runtime: runs agent code in isolated containers.
- Test tools: Trace Inspector, custom judge tests and an AgentOps Agent.
The proof
IBM gives no numbers. It says the catalog shows speed and reliability data for select agents such as Ziemacs and Cognos Partners. IBM claims the runtime has zero lateral movement.
What is not known
The source does not say when the features ship or what they cost. The catalog covers only select agents and MCP servers. No customer has tested the claims in public.
Insight: The fight is for the layer that lists all agents
IBM says most platforms manage only the agents in their own ecosystem. On 26 October 2026, Microsoft said it will extend its security platform to monitor agents in company networks. This reads as a race to own the control layer, and the first layer that holds the full list of agents can set the rules. Leaders can choose before agents multiply.
