Athenahealth patients can connect Claude to their health records
Patients of Athenahealth, a provider for more than 20% of the US population, can let Claude read their records.
Athenahealth, a US healthcare provider, launched AthenaPatient MCP. This server connects patient records to Claude from Anthropic. MCP is a method to connect AI tools to data. Patients use their account to connect, select the data that Claude can see, and can revoke access. Athenahealth says the data cannot be used to train Anthropic models.
How it works
Claude can use lab results, vitals, medications and other record data to answer questions. Only users who pay for Claude Pro ($20 a month) or Claude Max ($100 a month) can use it. Not all patients give data to Claude.
The numbers
Pew Research Center found that 34% of US adults have used a chatbot for medical advice. Many respondents prefer that a human oversees AI in clinical work. The source gives no test results for the tool.
What is not known
Athenahealth says the tool gives no medical advice and does not replace a clinician. It is not known if the tool improves patient outcomes. The claim that the data cannot train models comes from Athenahealth.
Insight: Anthropic is putting Claude where sector records live
On 26 October, Anthropic released a Claude plugin made with about 30 nonprofits. At this time Claude connects to patient records. This reads as a race to be the AI layer in the records of each sector. Tell your vendors to show the data that such connections can read.
