Sam Altman met about 50 Samsung executives in South Korea
Samsung says the talks covered AI and business use, but no new deal came out of the visit.
Sam Altman, the chief of OpenAI, made an unannounced visit to South Korea on the weekend. On Saturday Altman met about 50 executives of Samsung companies in Yongin, south of Seoul, Samsung said. South Korean media also report a lunch with Chey Tae-won, the chairman of SK Group. The two groups agreed in October 2025 to increase production of advanced memory chips for the Stargate plan of OpenAI.
What was said
Samsung says the talks covered AI developments, business use, and the effect of AI on how companies make decisions. The executives came from electronics, finance and biotechnology companies.
Media report that senior persons of SK Hynix and SK Telecom were at the lunch.
The record
Stargate is the plan of OpenAI to make AI infrastructure around the world. In October 2025, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix planned to increase memory chip production. OpenAI and its South Korean partners agreed to explore AI data centers in the country.
In July, Altman met Samsung Electronics Executive Chairman Jay Y. Lee in San Francisco.
What is not known
No deal was announced. Media say the SK talks possibly covered chips and data centers, but the persons there gave no information. SK Hynix said it could not say if the meeting was correct.
Insight: Samsung can be a supplier and a buyer
Altman met leaders from the finance and biotechnology companies of Samsung, not only its chip makers. Samsung says the talks covered how AI changes decisions in companies. This looks like a plan to sell AI to the firms that supply memory chips. It can connect the two sides more. Look for an OpenAI deal with a Samsung company that is not about chips.
