Google gives three agent tools to the CNCF and ships Substrate 1.0
Google says that Agent Substrate restores a paused AI agent in less than 500 milliseconds, and the tool is on its GKE service.
Google gave three open source projects to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). These are Agent Substrate, gVisor and OpenRL. The CNCF is a neutral group for Kubernetes, the software that operates apps in containers. Agent Substrate is at version 1.0 and is on GKE, the Kubernetes service of Google Cloud. Google tells us that it saves memory because it pauses idle agents.
What each one does
- Agent Substrate: saves a paused agent to storage and restores it.
- gVisor: a light layer that keeps untrusted code away from the host system.
- OpenRL: trains agents with rewards on Kubernetes.
The numbers
Google says that Agent Substrate restores an agent in less than 500 milliseconds. It also says that the tool holds 10 times more sandboxes than standard containers. The project has more than 100 contributors since May 2026.
What is not known
The source gives no test by an external party. The three projects are in onboarding at the CNCF. The price of the managed service is not given.
Insight: Every big cloud now gives away its agent sandbox
In October 2026 AWS put out Strands Box, Alibaba gave OpenSandbox to the Agentic AI Foundation, and NVIDIA opened Run:ai. At this time Google gives gVisor and Agent Substrate to the CNCF. This reads as a race to set the agent sandbox standard. The code is free, and a Google service is one option to operate it. Builders get more options.
