Grok handled 59.54% of Coinbase AI agent trading volume in one week

Coinbase has not built the spending limits for these agents. It gave no revenue number for Coinbase for Agents.

Coinbase data show that Grok of xAI handled 59.54% of the notional trading volume of AI agents. The week was September 14 to September 21. Notional volume is the stated value of the trades. Custom command-line setups had 21.73%, Claude had 13.37% and ChatGPT had 1.54%. On September 25, the Coinbase chief executive Armstrong called Grok the primary client for agent traders.

What is new

Coinbase for Agents started on June 11. It links assistants to a user account and they can trade, read portfolio data and pay for services. On October 22, Coinbase tells that its platform is open for AI agents, for crypto, stocks and derivatives.

The proof

The only numbers are the volume shares of one week. Coinbase gave no revenue number. It cites a projection of $3 trillion to $5 trillion in agent transactions by 2030.

What is not known

Coinbase tells that limits on spending and trade quantity are not live. It tells that they come after the start. It warns that trading can cause total loss and that agents can be incorrect. Todd Sheffield of Visa puts correct x402 volume at $19 million after removal of fake trades. x402 is a Coinbase payment standard for agents.

Insight: Each platform counts agent volume its own way

Coinbase counts a 59.54% Grok share in one week. A related report tells that RippleX counts agent payments as about 25% of work on its network. Stripe tells that its agent purchases grew 38 times. This looks like a race to be the payment routing for agents. Each player gives its own count, and the $19 million of Visa shows how far a count can move. Use only numbers without fake trades.
