Cloudflare adds web search for AI agents in AI Gateway beta

The search, the logs and the bill go through one gateway, but Cloudflare gave no test results for search quality.

Cloudflare started a beta of a Web Search API in its AI Gateway. An AI agent can get live web results from Ceramic.ai, Exa and Linkup. Cloudflare says that it records each search with the model query and puts the search and the model on one bill. The company gave no data on how good the results are.

How it works

A developer sends a query to the Web Search API with an AI Gateway token and the name of a search provider. The API gives the results to the model as context. A team can use the keys of its provider.

The terms

  • Providers must follow the rules of Cloudflare for verified bots.
  • Providers must give the source of each result.
  • The price is the price of the provider, with no markup.
  • Cloudflare will show which providers keep no data.

What is not known

Cloudflare gave no test results. Readers on Hacker News, a forum, discuss search quality, data limits, and if one API is good against other tools. Cloudflare wants to put server tools in AI Gateway, with web search first.

Insight: Cloudflare wants AI Gateway to be the one gate for agents

In October 2026, Cloudflare put Auto Router in AI Gateway. It selects a model for each task and is free in the beta. Web search is the next tool at the same gate. This looks like a race to hold the gate that agents must use, and its holder sets the rules. A team gets one bill, but then uses one vendor for all of it.
