Mistral releases Large 4 open weights under a modified MIT license

A company can use the model for business with no revenue limit, but must sign a deal with Mistral to sell access to it.

On October 29, 2026, Mistral AI put the weights of Mistral Large 4 on Hugging Face, a public site for models. Weights are the files that let a company operate the model. The download is 1,060.6 GB and has no access gate. The model has about 1.05 trillion parameters, which are the numbers inside a model. 49 billion are active for each token. A license came with the weights.

What is new

The model uses 128 experts, and 4 work on each token. It works with text and images. A compressed version is also free. The card of the model tells of a context of 1M tokens.

The license terms

The license gives the right to use, change and sell the model, and to do further training. It has no revenue limit and no user limit. One condition applies. A business that operates a Model as a Service must sign a commercial license with Mistral. 3 uses are not in that clause:

  • Apps with the model as one part.
  • A relay of requests to models that other firms host.
  • Internal use and use through Mistral tools.

What is not known

No one has used the compressed version at scale to check the scores. The 1M context and the low API price are also not shown. The benchmark charts come from Mistral.

Insight: The open model keeps one gate closed

In October Mistral set the Large 4 API price at $1.36 for 1M input tokens, against $5.00 for GPT-5.5. At this time the weights are free, with one limit on access sales. This reads as a toll gate: all can operate the model, but another API seller must sign a deal with Mistral. Teams that want to sell access must do a check of the license first.
