ChatGPT search volume is 20 percent of the volume at Google
OpenAI tells that ChatGPT does 1 search for each 5 that Google does, but it gave no source for the Google number.
Adam Fry, the ChatGPT consumer product head at OpenAI, told this at a briefing on Monday. OpenAI counts a search as each query that causes a web search. It does not count simple tasks about one word. Fry did not tell where the Google number comes from.
What is new
Fry tells that this tool goes to “a canvas”: a visual screen in a chatbot answer. OpenAI names it Intelligent UI. Google also adds AI tools to search and sends less traffic to other sites.
The numbers
The 20 percent number is the only number from OpenAI. In the 2023 Google antitrust trial, Satya Nadella of Microsoft told that Bing had about 3 percent of the market. That was after more than 10 years. OpenAI gave no data for its Google number.
What is not known
Fry tells that ads did not decrease use of the product. OpenAI gave no data. Last month it started to show images of ad products. An IPO (a first sale of shares to the public) can come in the first months of next year.
Insight: OpenAI shows its search volume when it needs ad buyers
OpenAI shows its search volume, adds ads with images and has an IPO in view in the same months. In India, where it has the most persons who use it, it also adds ads. This reads as a try to show advertisers and investors that ChatGPT is where persons look for products. Advertisers get a new channel, but the numbers come only from OpenAI.
