Google adds Guided Learning to Classroom and sets K-12 AI to off

Google will set Gemini and Search AI to off for K-12 student accounts until school administrators set it to on.

Google told about changes to its AI tools for schools. Guided Learning, a Gemini study tool that coaches students with questions and step-by-step instructions, is at this time in Google Classroom worldwide. A pilot in Search starts in select US schools in the month. Google says its research shows learning increases, but it gave no figures.

What is new

In Classroom, a teacher gives a Guided Learning task that uses class material. Teachers get real-time insights. In Search, student accounts get help with homework step by step, and not the answers.

The proof

Google says it tested the tool with schools and educators. It gave no numbers and no study data. It told of new research, Google.org money and training for educators, with no specifics.

What is not known

Google will tell schools the dates of the control change in the next months. It did not tell how Search finds homework help. It did not tell when Search stops the pilot, only that more districts follow.

Insight: Off by default makes the school administrator the gate

On 28 October 2026, Google told investors that agents will go to the 1 billion users of the Gemini app this year. For schools, it makes AI off until an administrator says yes. This seems to be a bid for trust: with control in school hands, Google can get a yes school by school. Vendors for schools must plan for that buyer.
