Mastercard and OpenAI sign an agreement that is more than Agent Pay
Mastercard says agent shopping volumes are small but increase each week, and it expects the holidays to speed up adoption.
The US company Mastercard disclosed an agreement with OpenAI, a company for AI models, on its Q3 2026 earnings call. Its chief executive said that the agreement covers payments, joint growth in services and AI transformation, and not only agent payments. No value or volume numbers were given, and the chief executive described the market as early days.
What is new
Mastercard says agent commerce must have trust in the payment, the agent, the ecosystem and the number of merchants that agents can find. It built one product for each:
- Agent Pay adds tokens and checks that the buyer allowed the agent.
- Verifiable Intent records the goal of the buyer.
- Agentic Trust Intelligence lets banks and merchants estimate agent payments.
- Agent Connect makes merchants easy for agents to find.
The proof
Shopify is one of the first large users. The company says agent volumes increase week on week, but gave no numbers. Its Digital Risk Protection tool has almost 800 enterprise customers.
What is not known
The terms of the OpenAI deal are not public. The chief executive said that the market is a patchwork. Mastercard does not use one-time virtual card numbers and backs full tokenisation (a token in place of the card number).
Insight: Mastercard wants to check agents on any route
Mastercard built its agent tool on x402, an open protocol that can transmit card or stablecoin payments. It backs tokens and not virtual card numbers, and it said that new agent uses make room for pricing. This looks like a toll gate: for any agent and any payment type, Mastercard wants to be the party that checks. Look at how the OpenAI deal sets the rules.
